No more sharing of national numbers: e-Boks and Scrive strengthen digital security for Danes

eID, Partner

A new partnership enables Danes to easily and securely verify their identity with businesses via e-Boks ID, AltID, and MitID. The collaboration aims to strengthen digital peace of mind for individual citizens, a need highlighted by the recent CPR leak.

A CPR number can identify a person in a registry but it does not in itself prove that the person on the other end of the phone or online is who they claim to be. On top of this, it opens companies and individuals up to unnecessary risk by gathering more personal data than is really needed to verify identity.

To strengthen the availability of secure identity verification, Scrive has entered a strategic partnership with e-Boks, Denmark’s leading digital communication platform, that combines e-Boks ID, AltID, and MitID into a single solution.

Peace of mind and choice for end-usersWhen personal data has been compromised, it is crucial that citizens can verify their identity securely. Whether an individual is filing an insurance claim, ordering a new SIM card or contacting their unemployment fund (a-kasse), a CPR number is no longer sufficient proof of identity. With access to e-Boks ID, AltID, and MitID, Danes can verify who they are in seconds using the digital ID solution they prefer and feel most comfortable with. The goal is to make verifying one’s identity with a digital ID during a phone call just as natural as logging in with MitID online.

"The recent CPR leak has shown that a CPR number alone is not proof of identity, even though it has often been treated as such. By bringing e-Boks ID, AltID, and MitID together, we make it easy for Danes to verify their identity in seconds using their preferred digital ID,"

Lorenz Flechtenmacher, co-founder and CEO of dewa.

For businesses: Three digital ID solutions in one integrationThe partnership combines Scrive’s access to MitID with e-Boks ID and AltID via dewa (partially owned by e-Boks). As a result, businesses can offer all three digital ID solutions through a single integration, avoiding the need to manage separate integrations for each provider.

Companies can ask customers to verify their identity directly during a customer service phone call or as part of a digital onboarding journey. The personal number can still be used to look up the customer in internal systems, while the digital ID confirms that the person on the phone is truly who they claim to be.

The need for secure identification extends beyond the CPR incident. Starting July 10, 2027, the EU’s new Anti-Money Laundering Regulation (AMLR) will generally apply, introducing standardized requirements for customer identification and verification across covered entities.

"Danes entrust e-Boks with their most important mail. Now, that trust is being extended to digital identity at a time when a CPR number alone cannot confirm who you are speaking with. Together, we are providing Danish businesses with access to e-Boks ID, AltID, and MitID through a single integration, making it easier to offer customers a simple and secure way to confirm their identity,"

Mads Rebsdorf, CEO of Scrive.

Expanding the Danish model across the NordicsThe partnership launches with the three Danish ID solutions, and the parties are already working to expand the offering with additional Nordic eIDs so multi-market businesses can rely on the same solution. Scrive currently consolidates BankID in Sweden and Norway as well as FTN in Finland, while e-Boks maintains a presence across several Nordic countries.

e-Boks already serves 5.4 million citizens and 600,000 businesses, with over 35 million monthly visits and Scrive processes over 80 million identity verifications annually across more than 60 countries. This means the partnership is perfectly positioned to deliver secure, trusted services to an ever-growing customer base for years to come.
